Consideration when replacing the first defective hot-pluggable hard disk of an array (example the SCSI ID 0) on a Compaq or HP Proliant server.

The array information for a HP Proliant Server is duplicated in each physical disk that is member of the array. Example a RAID 5 array has at least three physical disks that could have the following locations: SCSI IDs 0, 1 & 2. In this case, the first disk in the array will be SCSI ID 0.

The Smart Array initialization reads the first disk and it extracts the information that needs for the first array. Some vendors of HP hard disk sells refurbished (used) hard disks that were members of an array. If you use one of these disks to replace a defective first position disk of your array, the Smart Array initialization takes this information as valid. You may receive a message like this:

1785 - Slot x Drive Array not Configured:

Drive positions appear to have changed – Run Drive Array Advanced Diagnostics if previous positions are unknown. Then turn system power OFF and move drives to their original positions.

You can opt in getting an original replacement part from HP or find a non-production server to clear the array information from that refurbished disk.

1787-Slot x Drive Array Operating in Interim Recovery Mode

The following SCSI drive(s) should be replaced:

SCSI Port x: SCSI ID x
