Microsoft Word shortcut to type common foreign characters:


Word includes a set of handy shortcuts for creating foreign characters. See table below.

For instance, to create the ñ of the word Español, you would type Ctrl+Shift+~' (you would hold the Ctrl and Shift key and press the ~ key)) and then type the n. Notice that the + (plus) sign indicate a combination of keys.

Ctrl+' Adds an acute accent to the character typed next (á,é,í,ó,ú)
Ctrl+'When followed by d or D, creates the old English character "eth"
Ctrl+`Adds a grave accent to the character typed next (à,è,ì,ò,ù)
Ctrl+Shift+^Adds a circumflex to the character typed next(â,ê,î,ô,û)
Ctrl+Shift+~Adds a tilde to the character typed next (ñ,Ñ)
Ctrl+Shift+:Adds a diaeresis or umlaut to the character typed next(ä,ë,ï,ö,ü)
Ctrl+Shift+@Adds a degree symbol above the letters a and A; used primarily in Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish (å,Å)
Ctrl+&Creates combination or Germanic characters based on the character typed next
Ctrl+,Adds a cedilla to the character typed next
Ctrl+/,Adds a slash through the letters o and O; used primarily in Danish and Norwegian
Alt+Ctrl+Shift+?Creates an upside-down question mark (¿)
Alt+Ctrl+Shift+!Creates an upside-down exclamation mark (¡)

Notice that you can also use the extended ASCII character table to type other characters using the numeric key pad in your keyboard. Example Alt+154 will type Ü. See the Extended ASCII table.
